Woolstock man facing charges after May 31st high speed chase in two counties.

A 41-year-old Woolstock man is facing charges after a high-speed chase in two counties on May 31st. Information was released Thursday by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. Hamilton County Sheriff Alex Pruismann reported that his deputies and the Webster City Police Department received a complaint that a male was circulating a house and harassing an individual within the city limits of Webster City. It was stated in the communication between the suspect and individual that the suspect would cause damage to the individual’s property and even harm the individuals and law officers if they were called for help. When law authorities, the suspect had already left the area. He was identified as Bill (William) Washington Smith of Woolstock. He is known by law enforcement to have a barred driving status. The officers and deputies then went to search for Smith as he was driving a red Dodge pickup truck. Smith was located on 210th Street just north of Webster City off of Des Moines Street. A Hamilton County Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle and at that time, the vehicle accelerated quickly and tried to evade law enforcement. The pursuit went through the northwestern part of Hamilton County and the southwest part of Wright County. At times of the pursuit, Smith would slam his brakes to get the following law enforcement vehicles to rear-end his vehicle. Smith was not successful. Speeds reached over 100 miles per hour at times. Sheriff Pruismann reported at various times, Smith would drive in a manner to purposefully hit the deputy vehicles. A Precision Immobilization Technique maneuver was used by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department to get the Smith vehicle to come to a stop. It was not successful and after the attempt, Smith was able to gain control of his truck and at that time, purposefully drove directly into the front end of a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy squad car causing substantial damage. After the collision, the Smith vehicle was immobilized and he fled on foot. After a brief foot pursuit and standoff, Smith was then apprehended by deputies with the help of a taser device. No law enforcement authorities were injured in the incident on May 31st. Smith was taken to a hospital for evaluation and further treatment.  He was then taken to the Hamilton County Jail facing the following charges. They are First Degree Criminal Mischief, Two Counts on Assault on a Peace Officer with a Deadly Weapon, Eluding, Driving While Barred and Reckless Driving.
