Jewell City Council looks at an ordinance for E-Bikes and Scooters during this week’s meeting.

Jewell- Jewell City Council members this week will be exploring the opportunity to coordinate and ordinance development with the city of Ellsworth to ensure consistency and alignment for the Police Department for the operation of Electric Scooters and E-Bikes.  Police chief Kaleb Morton was in attendance at last Monday’s meeting reviewing the ordinance. He would like to see all scooters and E-bikes have flags and lights and for underage riders to wear helmets while operating. There will be further action taken at another city council meeting in Jewell.

A new pickle ball court is coming to the Jewell City Park. The court is being worked with the removal of old cement. Cement and labor were donated from J.A. Concrete. In addition, funds for the project were received from Poet Biorefining for purchase of paint for the pickle ball court to be painted by Dennis Frayne.

The Jewell City Council discussed a chapter for peddlers, solicitors and transient merchants with exploring the possibility of an annual fee for food trucks. The council will allow an annual fee of $100 for all food trucks in addition to the $10 annual licensing fee. There will be a public hearing for the ordinance change on Monday, July 13th at 7:15 p.m. at the Jewell City Hall.

The Jewell City Council commended the work of Jewell Public Works director Terry Anderson for the new taller light poles installed on Jewell’s Main Street. The poles will help with better lighting as the community prepares for its Jewell Jubilee observance this weekend. Anderson also received his wastewater certificate and is now fully certified with the state of Iowa. All old landscape blocks have been removed from Water Works Park in Jewell. The ground has been prepared for new landscaping work to start soon.
