Fort Dodge- Police in Fort Dodge announced Wednesday that no charges will be filed in connection with a fatal shooting on July 24th after investigators determined the shooter acted in self-defense. The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Third Avenue North. 45-year-old Thomas H. Ahrens of Fort Dodge was shot, taken to Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center and pronounced dead at the hospital. 31-year-old Josiah Byram of Fort Dodge was identified on the scene as being the shooter. He was interviewed at the Webster County Law Enforcement Center while other investigative efforts continued at the scene. It was learned that Byram was actively retreating from an attack made by Ahrens, which ultimately led into Byram’s own residence where Byram fired a single shot which struck Ahrens. Byram then called 911 and reported the incident to dispatchers with the Webster County Telecommunications Center. All of the interviews and available evidence were submitted to the Webster County Attorney’s Office. After a review, it was determined by the County Attorney that Byram was acting in self-defense and as a result no charges will be filed in the case.
