The Roland-Story Norsemen and South Hamilton Hawks boys track teams made the trip down to the Des Moines Metro on Thursday evening, to compete in the annual Heart of Iowa Conference track meet at Saydel High School in Des Moines. The Hawks and Norsemen were joined by the host Eagles, as well as Greene County, Nevada, PCM, Perry and West Marshall.
Roland-Story would put together a solid overall meet, even with picking up just two event wis, as Kale Lande won the boys 400m dash in a season-best time of 50.38, while the Norsemen won the boys 4×800 relay in a time of 8:41.64 with the team of Lande-Johnson-Tjernagel-Kilstofte. The Norsemen boys would pick up a bevy of 2nd place finishes, placing 2nd in the shuttle hurdle relay in a time of 1:06.66 with Berggren-Patton-Strum-Long, 2nd in the sprint medley in a time of 1:37.28 with Knoll-Berggren-Lettow-Greenfield, while Patrick Gonzales placed 2nd in the shot put with a throw of 43′ 8″, and Ben Greenfield placed 2nd in the 800m run in a time of 2:04.84.
South Hamilton would see a handful of winners on Thursday night, beginning with the boys sprint medley, which won in a time of 1:36.57 with the team of Severseike-Drake-Hodnefield-Koehnk. Ty Koehnk would then follow up by winning the 200m dash in a time of 23.50, before leading off what would be the race of the night. The boys 4×400 relay would feature a South Hamilton team that had the fastest time in Class 1A by over 3 seconds coming in, and a Roland-Story team that had the fastest time in Class 2A by just under a second entering.
In a battle of titans, it was South Hamilton that would edge the Norsemen, as freshman Kolby Hodnefield held off senior Kale Lande as South Hamilton laid down a season-best time of 3:25.14, the best time in Class 1A by over 4 seconds with the team of Koehnk-Ricke-Severseike-Hodnefield. Roland-Story placed 2nd in a time of 3:25.55, the best time in Class 2A by over 2 seconds, with the team of McIlrath-Johnson-Greenfield-Lande.
Roland-Story would finish in 2nd place with 125 points, while South Hamilton finished in 5th with 93 points. Nevada was the team champion with 157 points, full meet results can be found at aatiming.com.
