Jewell City Council members updated on recent water plant shutdown and plans on trail to Little Wall Lake at Monday meeting

Jewell- This week, the Jewell City Council met with its Public Works Director Terry Anderson on the recent shutdown of the water plant. The plant is up and running after a disruption earlier this month. During the shutdown of the plant to repair pipes there was some sedimentation released into the system causing some discoloration that was not harmful. Anderson informed the council the tower was dumped to move water through the system and allowing any discoloration to be flushed out. A quote was presented from Electric Pump of Des Moines in the amount of $22,570 for an Endress and Hauser free chlorine system. The current system is outdated, and this would allow real time monitoring and does not use reagents. The Jewell City Council approved the quote from Electric Pump at their meeting this week.

Hamilton County Conservation Board director Brian Lammers spoke to the Jewell City Council on the upcoming trail project linking Jewell along East Lane to Little Wall Lake Park south of Jewell. Lammers requested the city apply for a REAP grant and requested a $25,000 contribution. The City of Jewell appreciates cooperative projects with Hamilton County and will be voting on a Resolution to support the trail project at the July 27th,2026 council meeting.

The Jewell City Council voted to approve a resolution for a 28E agreement with the City of Ellsworth for police services until June 30,2030. There was also a discussion on the Jewell fireworks ordinance. This would prohibit the use and explosion of consumer fireworks within the corporate limits of Jewell. The purpose of reviewing the ordinance is because it currently misaligns with the current state legislature which states that city governments can no longer restrict or prohibit within their code the use of fireworks on July 3rd from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m., July 4th from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. and on December 31st from 9 a.m. until 12:30 a.m.on January 1st. There was no motion made, the intent was to share the information.

Jewell Mayor Mick Walker and the council reviewed the preliminary CAT ( Community Attraction and Tourism) grant application. Suggestions will be passed along to Rick Young and the Jewell pool committee
