WEBSTER CITY, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx softball team returned to action on Saturday, as they hosted the annual Dave Hilton Classic at Webster City High School. The Lynx were joined in the tournament by (4A) #1 Carlisle, Algona and Saydel.
After falling to the top-ranked Wildcats on Friday night, Webster City was ready for a 2nd-meeting with Carlisle, as the Wildcats were first on the board with an RBI ground out in the first, but Webster City answered with a run in the 2nd on a Jaylyn Bahrenfuss RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tied until the 4th, when the Lynx took the lead on a Morgan Hackbarth RBI single, as Tessa Hansen later scored on a wild pitch to put the Lynx up 3-1. Webster City added onto the lead in the 5th on a Jakaela Cherry RBI to go up 4-1, as Carlisle responded with a solo home run in the 6th to cut the deficit, but the Lynx would hold on in the 7th for a massive, 4-2 upset victory, the first for Webster City over Carlisle since 1993.
Jakaela Cherry pitched her best game as a Lynx, throwing the complete game, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and striking out 3 as the Webster City defense did not commit an error in the contest. Cherry was also 2-for-3 with an RBI single, as Amanda Lahr was 2-for-2 with 2 doubles.
Webster City followed up the upset with a matchup against the Saydel Eagles, as the Lynx pounced on Saydel in the first with 3 runs off a Morgan Tempel RBI single, a passed ball and a Jaylyn Bahrenfuss RBI single to put the Lynx ahead 3-0. That score lasted all the way to the 6th, when Saydel got on the board with a solo home run, as the Lynx answered in the bottom of the 6th with a Morgan Hackbarth RBI single to give the Lynx a 4-1 advantage and an eventual 4-1 win.
Briley VanDeer was the winning pitcher, going 6 innings and allowing 1 run on 2 hits and striking out 5, as Morgan Tempel went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Morgan Hackbarth went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
