Webster City softball falls to (1A) #6 St. Edmond on Friday, goes 1-1 in Perry Tournament on Saturday

WEBSTER CITY, Ia. AND PERRY, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx softball team returned to action on Friday, as they hosted the St. Edmond Gaels in North Central Conference action at Webster City High School. Webster City entered with a record of 2-3, while St. Edmond entered at 7-0 and ranked #6 in Class 1A.

Friday’s first 3 innings would be scoreless, but St. Edmond finally broke through in the 4th with 4 runs to take a 4-0 lead. The Gaels would be held off the scoreboard the next 2 innings, but broke the game open with 6 runs in the 7th to claim a 10-0 victory.

Briley VanDeer took the loss, pitching 4 innings and allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits and struck out 1. Jakaela Cherry went 2-for-3 with a double, while Amanda Lahr also went 2-for-3.

Webster City would turn around and compete in the Graves Classic at Perry on Saturday, and would open the day by facing the host Jayettes.

The Lynx got on the board first with a Morgan Hackbarth sac fly and an Amanda Lahr RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. Webster City’s offense then broke things open in the 2nd with 5 runs behind an Alivia Burns RBI single, a Morgan Temple RBI double, a Haydin Sealine RBI single, an Amanda Lahr RBI single and an error to put the Lynx ahead 7-0. The Lynx added 2 more runs in the 3rd off a Morgan Tempel 2-run home run to make the score 9-0, before Perry scored 2 runs in the 3rd to make it 9-2. Webster City added a run on a Hayden McCoy RBI single in the 4th, as Perry made a big rally to score 4 runs in the 4th, but weren’t able to make up the deficit in a 10-6, 5-inning win for the Lynx.

Briley VanDeer was the winning pitcher, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and striking out 4 in 3.2 innings. Morgan Tempel went 3-for-4 with a home run, 2 doubles and 4 RBI, while Amanda Lahr went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles.

Webster City then faced (3A) #5 Van Meter in the championship game, as the 5th-ranked Bulldogs methodically built their lead with 2 runs each in the first, second and third, followed by 1 run in the 4th and 2 runs in the 5th. Webster City got on the board behind an Alivia Burns RBI single in the 5th, but the Lynx would ultimately fall to Van Meter by a score of 9-1 in 5 innings.

Jakaela Cherry was the losing pitcher, going 5 innings and allowing 9 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits and striking out 2.

Webster City softball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Algona to take on the Bulldogs in North Central Conference action with first pitch at 7:30 PM.
