FONDA, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx baseball team returned to action on Saturday morning, as they made the trek to Buena Vista County to play in the Newell-Fonda Tournament at the Fonda Baseball Field. The Lynx were joined by the host Mustangs, as well as Hinton and Council Bluffs St. Albert.
The Lynx opened up by taking on Hinton, as the first 4 innings would be scoreless, as Webster City’s bats would finally wake up in the 5th inning with 4 runs off a Carter Mickelson RBI single and an Aiden Hrnicek bases-clearing double to put the Lynx ahead 4-0. Webster City would add 3 more runs in the 6th off an Alex Staley RBI double, a Kaleb Hansen RBI single and a wild pitch to take a 7-0 lead, before blowing the doors open in the 7th on 2 wild pitches, a Matt Tesdahl RBI single, a Carter Mickelson RBI ground out and a 3rd wild pitch as the Lynx would collect a 12-0 victory.
Braylon Dyvig was the winning pitcher in relief, throwing 4 innings and not allowing a hit and striking out 3. Aiden Hrnicek went 1-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI, as Carter Mickelson went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.
Game 2 saw the Lynx face off with the Falcons of St. Albert, as Webster City would dominate from the outset, scoring 8 runs on a Carter Mickelson RBI ground out, an Aiden Hrnicek RBI single, an Eian Becker 2-run RBI single, an Alex Staley bases-clearing double and a Jaxon Griffith RBI single to put the Lynx up 8-0 after one. Webster City added a run in the 2nd on an Alex Staley RBI single to make it 9-0, but scoring ceased until St. Albert put up 2 runs in the 5th to make it 9-2. Webster City added a run in the 5th on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to make it 10-2, as the Lynx cruised in the final two innings for the 10-2 win.
Alex Staley was the winning pitcher, going 2.1 innings and allowing no runs on 2 hits with 3 strikeouts. Staley also went 2-for-3 with a double and 4 RBI, while Eian Becker went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Webster City baseball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Algona to take on the Bulldogs in a North Central Conference doubleheader, with Game 1 slated for 5 PM.
