Webster City football falls in home opener to Spencer, 24-14

The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they opened their home slate in the 2024 season by hosting the Spencer Tigers in non-district action at Lynx Field. Webster City entered at 1-0, while Spencer entered at 0-1.

Friday’s game would be a battle of possession, as Spencer struck first in the 1st quarter on a Cael Bruning 13-yard touchdown run to put the Tigers up 7-0. Webster City answered very soon after as wingback Jaxon Griffith broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 7-7. Webster City would then put together a drive late in the 1st half, as a rare air assault saw Luke Estlund find Carter Mickelson for a 13-yard touchdown pass to put Webster City ahead 14-7, but Spencer tied it before halftime off a Miles Robbins 45-yard touchdown run.

Scoring would dry up in the 3rd quarter, but Spencer would punch in a score to start the 4th quarter on a Cael Bruning 13-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Matthiesen to put the Tigers up 21-14. A delay would come with 8:01 to go in the game as the lights at Lynx Field shut off, but would come on after around a 20-30 minute wait. The Tigers would fire the decisive shot with a 26-yard field goal from Brady Vreeman to ultimately give Spencer a 24-14 win.

Jaxon Griffith would lead the Lynx in rushing with 90 yards on 9 carries, along with his 56-yard touchdown run. Spinner back Luke Estlund would go 2-4 with 26 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another 13 yards. Aiden Hrnicek led the Lynx defensively with 8.5 tackles.

Webster City football returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Alleman to take on North Polk in non-district action at North Polk High School, with kickoff at 7:30 PM.
