South Hamilton football runs over Woodward-Granger on senior night, 50-0

The South Hamilton Hawks football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Woodward-Granger Hawks for Class 1A, District 7 action at Bill Taylor Field for senior night in Jewell. South Hamilton entered with a record of 5-1 and 3-0 in the district, while Woodward-Granger entered at 3-3 and 3-0 in the district as well.

Woodward-Granger started the night with the football, but their opening drive was cut short by a Landon Gruefe interception. South Hamilton would march down the field with a heavy dose of Noah Gunderson, before Nick Severseike scored from 2 yards out to make 8-0 South Hamilton. W-G would go 3-and-out on their ensuing drive, as the home Hawks struck quickly this time, as Nick Seversieke took a 4th and 2 handoff 49 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 South Hamilton. The home Hawks then pulled a rabbit out of the hat, as Braden Young executed a perfect pooch kick which was recovered by Dylan Oskvig and gave South Hamilton excellent field position. Noah Gunderson would later score from 4 yards out to give South Hamilton a 22-0 advantage. Later in the 2nd quarter, Nick Severseike got his hat trick with his 3rd touchdown on a 5-yard run to make it 28-0 South Hamilton. Woodward-Granger would then put together their best drive of the night at the end of the half, but at 4th and goal at the 5, a Bryan Jesse pass was picked off by Kolby Hodnefield and run back 97 yards for a touchdown to put the home Hawks up 36-0 at halftime.

The 2nd half would be a quick one with running clock coming into the equation. South Hamilton would march down in the 3rd quarter, as Nick Severseike scored his 4th touchdown of the night to put South Hamilton up 44-0. Braden Young would then put the punctuation on the win with a 47-yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter and the shutout-sealing interception to give South Hamilton a 50-0 win and their 3rd district title in 4 years.

Nick Severseike led all rushers with 125 yards and 4 touchdowns on 16 carries, while Noah Gunderson had 83 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. South Hamilton’s defense would hold Woodward-Granger to 18 yards rushing in the win.

South Hamilton wraps up the regular season next week, as they travel to Des Moines to face Grand View Christian at Saydel High School.
