(3A) #4 Webster City upsets (4A) #3 North Polk on homecoming, 21-20

The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they welcomed in the North Polk Comets to Lynx Field for Webster City’s homecoming game. Webster City entered at 2-0 with wins over Fort Dodge and Spencer, while North Polk entered at 2-0 with wins over Bondurant-Farrar and Carlisle.

The night started off fast for the Comets, as Isaac Zoske and company were able to throw the ball down the field early, with the Comets going up 13-0 in the first quarter off a pair of Zoske touchdown passes. Webster City would spin their tires in the mud for most of the first half, with things looking dire after Keegan Hisler’s pass getting picked off by Cohan Torres, and North Polk marching inside the 5. However, a fumble on the goal line by the Comets was scooped up by Hisler and run back 99 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-7 North Polk. On the ensuing North Polk drive, the Comets were forced to punt, but the snap would go over Bradyn Cory’s head and out of the back of the endzone for a safety, to make the halftime score 13-9.

North Polk would come out strong in the 2nd half, with Isaac Zoske hitting Nathan Feldman for a 30-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-9 North Polk. However, the Lynx offense would awaken, as Jaxon Cherry would rip off a 45-yard touchdown run late in the 3rd quarter to make it 20-15 after the missed PAT. North Polk would fumble almost immediately on their ensuing drive and the Lynx would jump on it. Webster City would take the lead early in the 4th quarter after a Jaxon Cherry 9-yard touchdown run to make the score 21-20 Webster City. Both teams would then trade possessions right down to the final minutes, as North Polk had one last crack to drive the field, but senior safety Briar Klaver picked off an Isaac Zoske pass with 52 seconds left to give Webster City the 21-20 upset.

Jaxon Cherry had another sensational night, with 24 carries, 161 yards, 2 touchdowns, 10.5 tackles, 9 solo and 3 tackles for loss. Webster City returns to action on Friday when they travel to Manchester to take on West Delaware at 7 PM.
