Webster City boys soccer off to best start in nearly a decade

The Webster City boys soccer team is in the midst of their most successful start since 2016, a year that saw the Lynx fall in the semifinal round of their Class 2A bracket to Dallas Center-Grimes, and ending the year with a 17-2 record.

Since then, the Lynx have hovered with records above .500 for 4 of the past 5 seasons (COVID not withstanding), but with a 5-1 start to the season, the Lynx have achieved their highest ranking since 2016, moving into the top 5 of Class 2A at #5 in the latest IHSSCA poll, released on Sunday afternoon.

Craig Signorin’s squad’s have long prided themselves on defense, and that remains the case in 2023, as the Lynx have allowed just 2 goals in the last 4 games. After a slow sophomore year, junior Eduardo Perez has claimed the bellcow roll, leading the team with 9 goals on the season, while sophomore Eddy Fuentes has emerged as a star in his own right, scoring 7 goals on the season.

After a slow start to the season, in which he allowed 7 goals in the first 3 games, senior goalkeeper Jon Magdaleno has not yielded a goal in his last two games (missing the HD-CAL game) and picked up 7 saves. Webster City returns to action on Monday night, as they travel north to take on Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in North Central Conference action.
