Two people arrested early Sunday morning after a jail break and chase in Webster County.

Freedom for an inmate from the Webster County Jail in Fort Dodge was short lived after his apprehension early this morning. The staff at the jail notified authorities of the escaped inmate shortly before 11 Saturday night. After an investigation was conducted it was learned that the male inmate had propped a third story exit door open before exiting out and using sheeting to climb down the alley. He was identified as 43 year old Jordan Mefferd of Fort Dodge. A police canvas of the immediate area was conducted and Mefferd’s inmate clothing was located. A K-9 track was done but the male’s scent was lost near the intersection of South 8th Street and First Avenue North. Through further investigation and utilization of city street cameras it was learned that Mefferd was likely in a silver Chevrolet Impala. Several addresses previously associated with Mefferd were then checked within Webster County. At approximately 1:12 this (Sunday) morning, the Impala was located in Otho and a traffic stop was initiated by a Webster County Sheriff’s deputy. The vehicle came to a stop before driving off in an attempt to elude deputies. Fort Dodge Police officers assisted in the pursuit and were able to deploy stop sticks near the intersection of 219th Street and Quail Avenue striking one of the vehicle’s tires. A slow speed pursuit then traveled through Fort Dodge before the car became disabled in the 100 block of South 14th Street. Mefferd and 27 year old Destiny Sumpter were both taken into custody without incident. Mefferd was charged with Felony Eluding and Felony Escape. Sumpter is charged with Violation of Probation and Aiding and Abetting Felony Escape. The two are being held in the Webster County Jail in Fort Dodge. Mefferd is being held on $169,000 cash bond while Sumpter’s bond is set at $20,000. The incident is still under investigation.
