The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams hosted Heart of Iowa Conference action on Friday night, as they welcomed in the Saydel Eagles from the Des Moines metro. South Hamilton’s girls entered with a 5-0 record, while South Hamilton’s boys entered at 3-1.
South Hamilton’s girls would get off to another hot start against their conference foes, as the Hawks led 23-9 after the 1st quarter. Saydel would not go quietly, as they cut the margin to 36-24 by the halftime break, putting them well within striking distance. However, South Hamilton would batten down the hatches on the defensive end, outscoring Saydel 34-17 in the 2nd half to bring in a 70-41 win. Makena Galetich led the Hawks with 25 points and 11 rebounds, while Hallee Feaker finished with 18 points. Paige Rummans led Saydel with 19 points.
The boys game followed with South Hamilton looking for revenge against the Eagles, as Saydel swept the season-series last year for the first time ever. South Hamilton’s offense would get off to a quick start, bucking a recent trend of slow starts, as they led 23-12 after one. The Hawks would continue their hot shooting into the 2nd quarter, and combined with stout defense, led 48-22 at the halftime break. South Hamilton’s offense would slow down in the 2nd half, but locked-in defense in from Matt Juber’s squad preserved a 68-46 win. Teagan Trask led South Hamilton with 25 points, including 5 three-pointers, while Cade Boten led Saydel with 21 points.
South Hamilton returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Nevada in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Nevada High School.
