CLARION, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys football team returned to the field on Friday night, as they hosted their longtime rivals in the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs in non-district action at the Clarion Football Field. CGD entered with a record of 1-0, while HD-CAL entered at 0-1.
It would be a good start for the Cowboys, who were without the services of star tailback Charlie Campbell, as CGD marched the field and took over half of the opening quarter off the clock and scored on a 4-yard touchdown run by Colin Sesker to put the Cowboys ahead 7-0. Hampton would answer with a 1-yard touchdown run by Lukas Showalter to tie the game at 7-7 to start the 2nd quarter. CGD would fumble the ensuing kickoff, giving Hampton a short field as Lukas Showalter scored from 31 yards out to put the Bulldogs ahead 14-7, before Showalter score his 3rd touchdown of the quarter from 17 yards out as HD-CAL took a 22-7 lead at halftime.
It would be the Bulldogs keeping control in the 2nd half, as Joseph Powers scored from 9 yards out to put Hampton ahead 29-7, before the Bulldogs tacked on a 30-yard field goal from Jesus Flores to put HD-CAL up 32-7 after three quarters. The Bulldogs added another Flores field goal in the 4th, as CGD would get back into the endzone on a JD Morrical touchdown as Hampton-Dumont-CAL secured a 35-13 win.
Colin Sesker would carry 11 times for 60 yards and a touchdown, while JD Morrical went 4-for-11 with 30 yards and 2 interceptions, while rushing for 52 yards and a touchdown. Huxley Lingenfelter led the Cowboys with 9 tackles on Friday.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Estherville to take on the Estherville-Lincoln Central Midgets at Estherville-Lincoln Central High School, with kickoff at 7 PM.
