ROLAND, Ia. — The Roland-Story Norsemen softball team returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Greene County Rams in Heart of Iowa Conference action at the Hennessey Diamonds. Roland-Story entered with a record of 2-1, while Greene County entered at 2-3.
A scoreless first inning gave way to a big 2nd inning for Greene County, with the Rams plating 5 runs to put themselves ahead 5-0. Greene County would add a run in the 4th, as Roland-Story responded with a run scoring off a passed ball to make the score 6-1. The Rams would add a run back in the 6th to take a 7-1 lead, as Roland-Story would then mount a furious rally in the 7th. The Norsemen scored 6 runs on a Maddie Berggren RBI single, a Jenna Birkland RBI single, followed by an Evelyn Carlson bases-clearing triple, where Carlson would score following an errant throw as Roland-Story came all the way back to tie the game at 7-7. A scoreless 8th moved the game into the 9th inning, and it was freshman Ali Johnson who walked it off on an RBI single to give Roland-Story an improbable 8-7 comeback victory.
Miley Geise picked up the win in the circle, pitching all 9 innings and allowing 7 runs (3 earned) on 12 hits and struck out 11. Evelyn Carlson went 2-for-4 with a triple and 4 RBI, while Miley Geise went 3-for-5.
Roland-Story softball returns to action on Tuesday, as they host the Forest City Indians in a non-conference matchup at the Hennessey Diamonds with first pitch at 7:30 PM.
