WEBSTER CITY, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to the gridiron on Friday Night, as they welcomed in their long time rivals in the Clear Lake Lions to Lynx Field in non-district play. Webster City entered with a record of 0-2, while Clear Lake entered at 2-0 and ranked #1 in Class 3A.
The first quarter would go scoreless between the two NCC rivals, but Webster City would be first on the board early in the 2nd quarter as Kaleb Hansen would score on a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Lynx ahead 6-0 after a blocked extra point. Clear Lake would then rile things up from there, as the Lions scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Jaxon McIntire to Sam Brownlee to put Clear Lake up 7-6. Webster City would fumble the ensuing kickoff, as Clear Lake scored soon thereafter on a 25-yard touchdown pass from McIntire to Maddon McIntire to put the Lions ahead 14-6. Clear Lake would score 3 more times in the 2nd quarter on a blocked punt, a 65-yard touchdown pass from McIntire to Brownlee and a 23-yard touchdown pass from McIntire to Brownlee as the Lions led 35-6 at halftime.
Clear Lake started the 2nd half with touchdown on a 90-yard return by Bradyn Watkins to put Clear Lake ahead 42-6. Webster City’s defense would make a big play as a Grant Arends strip sack was recovered by Israel Torres, Arends then got free and scored on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Alex Staley as the Lynx cut the score to 42-14. Clear Lake would score 4 more times in the contest, once in the third quarter and 3 times in the fourth as the Lions closed out a 70-14 victory over the Lynx.
The Ace Hardware of Webster City Ace of the Game was Lynx senior Grant Arends, who recorded a strip sack and caught a 24-yard touchdown pass for Webster City. Kaleb Hansen ran 23 times for 54 yards and a touchdown, while Alex Staley was 1-for-3 for 24 yards and a touchdown.
