POCAHONTAS, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Tuesday night, as they made the trip west on Highway 3 to take on the Pocahontas Area Indians in the Class 2A, Substate 2 quarterfinals at the Pocahontas Athletic Complex. CGD entered with a record of 11-17, while Pocahontas Area entered at 17-11.
Pocahontas started the scoring early with a run in the top of the first, before adding 2 more runs in the 3rd and a run in the 5th with the Indians ahead 4-0. The Cowboy bats would struggle throughout the night behind a dominant pitching performance from the Indians, as Pocahontas would clinch a 4-0 victory.
Freshman Drew Smith was charged with the loss, going 5 innings and allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits with 3 strikeouts, as Jacob Ruba collected the only hit of the night for the Cowboys.
Pocahontas Area advances to face the Forest City Indians in the Class 2A, Substate 2 semifinals on Saturday night at the Pocahontas Athletic Complex at 7 PM. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’s season ends with a record of 11-18.
