Eagle Grove baseball outlasts Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in playoff opener, 8-7

CLARION, Ia. — The Eagle Grove Eagles baseball team returned to action on Friday night, as they took on the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals in their Class 2A, Substate 2 first round game at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School. Eagle Grove entered with a record of 6-17, while GHV entered with a record of 12-12.

Friday’s game would be wild from start to finish, as Eagle Grove plated 3 runs in the top of the first off a Jackson Babcock steal of home and a Coleson Schafer 2-run RBI single, as GHV answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the first to make it 3-2 Eagles after 1. GHV took the lead in the 2nd, as they led 4-3, before Eagle Grove tied it with a Jace Olson bases-loaded walk in the 3rd to make it 4-4. Eagle Grove would take the lead in the 4th with a Trenton Robinson 2-run RBI double to go ahead 6-4. Garner answered with a run in the 5th, followed by 3 runs in the 6th as the Cardinals took an 8-6 lead. Eagle Grove would have one more rally in them, as the Eagles tied the game on a passed ball, before an Adrian Whipple 2-run RBI single put the Eagles up 9-8, as they closed things down in the 7th for a 9-8 victory.

Trenton Robinson picked up the win in relief, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits and struck out 2, as Robinson also went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI. Adrian Whipple went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Coleson Schafer went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball’s season ends with a record of 12-13, as Eagle Grove advances to the Class 2A, Substate 2 quarterfinals, as they take on the Forest City Indians at the PAC Athletic Complex in Pocahontas on Tuesday evening, with first pitch at 5 PM on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
