Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball dominates Central Springs in playoff opener, 9-1

CLARION, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Friday evening, as they hosted the Central Springs Panthers in Class 2A, Substate 2 first round action at CGD High School. CGD entered with a record of 10-17, as Central Springs entered at 9-12.

After a scoreless first inning and a half, CGD broke the dam open with a 4-run second on a Paxton Lingenfelter bases-clearing RBI single and a wild pitch to put the Cowboys up 4-0. CGD would then add to the lead with a run off an error in the 3rd, 3 runs in the 4th off an error, a wild pitch and a Drew Smith RBI single, before an error allowed another run to score in the 5th to put the Cowboys ahead 9-0. Central Springs would score a run in the 6th, but would be held down from there as the Cowboys scored a 9-1 victory.

Drew Smith was the winning pitcher, pitching the best game of his young career, going all 7 innings and allowing 1 run on 7 hits and striking out 3. Smith also went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Paxton Lingenfelter was 1-for-3 with a single and 3 RBI.

Central Springs season ends with a record of 9-13, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball advances to face Pocahontas Area in the Class 2A, Substate 2 quarterfinals at the PAC Athletic Complex at 7 PM on Tuesday night on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
