Jewell City Council updated on funding for a new pool and Main Street lights.

Jewell-A public hearing on a new ordinance for new or replaced sidewalks was a part of this week’s Jewell City Council meeting. This is for all sidewalks with a measurement five inches of width. The first reading of the new ordinance will be at the July 13th council meeting for sidewalks to conform to this new ordinance. The Jewell City Council learned that new light poles were installed on Main Street adding nine feet to the poles which allow more light to spread across the sidewalks and intersections.

The council was updated from the SHAPE (South Hamilton Area Pool and Exercise) Committee that they have reached 70 percent funding for Phase 1 of the pool fundraising efforts. The committee informed that work has begun on applying for the CAT (Community Attraction and Tourism) Grant ,which will take the funding to 90 percent.

Another issue at the Jewell City Council meeting was on the possibility of an E-Bike/Scooter ordinance for the community. Council member Joe Joslin made a motion to table the discussion until autumn. He expressed to the council the importance  of taking additional time to review and better understand the proposed ordinance and its potential ramification before making any decision. A thorough evaluation will help ensure that any action taken is informed, practical and in the best of the community of Jewell. The motion was approved to table the issue to this fall.

Officials with ISG supplied maps of the Jewell sewer system, the sanitary system and the lagoon for the council members to look over. ISG will present a total compilation of work that needs to be done to improve the systems at a future meeting.
