CLARION, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls softball team returned to action on Thursday evening, as they hosted the West Hancock Eagles in non-conference action at CGD High School. CGD entered with a record of 1-17, while West Hancock entered at 5-15.
The first 2 innings would be scoreless, before West Hancock took the initial lead in the 3rd at 1-0. CGD would answer in the 4th with 3 runs on a Blaire Askelsen RBI double and a Kayla Hasty 2-run RBI single to put the Cowgirls ahead 3-1. West Hancock would answer with a run in the 5th, followed by 4 runs in the 6th to take a 6-3 lead. CGD would mount their own rally in the 6th, drawing back-to-back, bases-loaded walks before a Blaire Askelsen 2-run RBI double put the Cowgirls ahead 7-6. West Hancock would tie the game in the top of the 7th, but a bunt by Marlee Thompson forced an Eagles error that allowed Cyprus Redenius to score and give the Cowgirls an 8-7, walkoff victory.
Kinlee Nail picked up the win in the circle, pitching all 7 innings, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 11 hits and striking out 6. Blaire Askelsen had the top day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while Kayla Hasty went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.
