HUMBOLDT, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx baseball team returned to action on Monday night, as they made the trip into Humboldt County to take on the Humboldt Wildcats in North Central Conference action at Humboldt High School. Webster City entered with a record of 13-2, while Humboldt entered with a record of 12-3.
It was a rough start for the Lynx in the opener, as Humboldt took an early lead off a 3-run home run, but Webster City answered in the 2nd with 3 runs off an error, a Jaxon Griffith RBI single and a Braylon Dyvig RBI single to tie the game at 3-3. The Lynx then took the lead in the 3rd with a 5 run frame, scoring on an error, a Syrus Willard RBI single, a Jaxon Griffith RBI double and a Braylon Dyvig 2-run RBI single as the Lynx led 8-3. Humboldt answered with a solo home run in the 3rd to make it 8-4, as the Wildcats then rallied late with a run in the 6th, before tying the game in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game at 8-8 and send it into extra innings. Webster City would take the lead in the 8th, as the Lynx drew back-to-back, bases-loaded hit-by-pitches to take a 10-8 lead. Webster City would shut down Humboldt in the bottom of the 8th for the 10-8, 8-inning victory.
Carter Mickelson was the winning pitchers, going 1.2 innings and allowing no runs on 1 hit and striking out 3 in relief. Braylon Dyvig would go 3-for-3 with 3 RBI, as Jaxon Griffith went 3-for-5 with a double and 2 RBI.
Game 2 started off just as inauspiciously as for Webster City, as the Wildcats again scored 3 runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead, but the Lynx answered with 3 runs in the 2nd on back-to-back bases-l0aded walks and a Jaxon Griffith sac fly to tie the game at 3-3 after two innings. Humboldt took the lead back on an error in the 3rd, before Webster City answered with 2 runs on a Humboldt error to take a 5-4 lead after 3 innings. Humboldt then roared into the lead in the 4th on a 3-run homer, only to be rebuffed by a Jaxon Griffith 2-run homer in the bottom half with the game tied at 7-7 after 4. Humboldt again reclaimed the lead off a solo home run in the 5th, as Webster City took the lead in the bottom half on a Jaxon Griffith RBI single and a Braylon Dyvig RBI single to take a 9-8 lead into the 6th. A scoreless 6th lead to the 7th, as Humboldt had the bases-loaded and 2 outs, but Webster City was able to get the final out to seal an 8-7 victory and a doubleheader sweep.
Carter Mickelson picked up the win in relief, going 3 innings and allowing 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 10. Jaxon Griffith went 2-for-4 in the game with a home run and 4 RBI, while Syrus Willard went 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
Webster City baseball returns to action on Friday, when they host the Boone Toreadors in non-conference action at Webster City High School with first pitch at 7 PM.
