Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball splits NCC doubleheader with Hampton-Dumont-CAL

HAMPTON, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Monday evening, as they made the short trip east on Highway 3 to take on the Hampton-Dumont-CAL Bulldogs in a North Central Conference doubleheader at Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School. CGD entered with a record of 4-7, while HD-CAL entered at 2-7.

CGD would jump out of the gate quickly in Game 1, as the Cowboys scored on an Ethan Hasty RBI single in the first, followed by a Charlie Campbell RBI single and a Chaz Lane sac fly in the 2nd as the Cowboys lead 3-0 after 2 innings. That 3-0 lead lasted until the 6th, when the Bulldogs rallied for 4 runs to take a 4-3 lead going into the 7th. CGD would rally, scoring off a Booker Lingenfelter RBI ground out to tie the game, as Paxton Lingenfelter then scored on a wild pitch to give CGD the lead, before Charlie Campbell extended the lead on an RBI ground out, as the Cowboys rallied for a 6-4 victory.

Drew Smith picked up the win in relief, pitching 2 innings and allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 2 hits and striking out 3. Charlie Campbell would go 1-for-4 with 2 RBI, while Ethan Hasty went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Game 2 saw CGD get on the board again early, scoring off an error in the first to take a 1-0 lead. HD-CAL would respond in the 3rd with a 3-run frame to take a 3-1 lead, as CGD answered in the 4th with a Tristan Kakacek RBI single to bring the score to 3-2. HD-CAL added 2 runs in the 5th to put the Bulldogs ahead 5-2, before CGD mounted a rally in the 7th, scoring on a Charlie Campbell RBI single, but couldn’t muster more than that in a 5-3 defeat.

Drew Smith was charged for the loss, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and striking out 5. Charlie Campbell went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Tristan Kakacek was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Tuesday, when they host Belmond-Klemme for a non-conference matchup at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School, with first pitch at 7:30 PM.
