Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball goes 1-1 in Wayne Bergstrom Classic on Saturday

CLARION, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Saturday, as they hosted the annual Wayne Bergstrom Classic at Clarion-Goldfield-Dows High School. The Cowboys were joined by Aplington-Parkersburg, Southeast Valley and Turkey Valley.

CGD opened the tournament by facing off with Turkey Valley, as following a scoreless first, the Cowboys poked a run across on a Chaz Lane RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. Turkey Valley answered with a run in the 4th to tie the game at 1-1, as CGD would answer in the bottom of the 5th with 2 runs scoring off an error to give the Cowboys a 3-1 lead and an eventual 3-1 win.

Drew Smith picked up the win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 1. Chaz Lane went 1-for-2 with an RBI single, while Booker Lingenfelter went 1-for-2.

CGD would face off with Aplington-Parkersburg in the championship, as CGD took an initial 1-0 lead in the 2nd off a Falcons error. The Cowboys added onto their lead in the 4th with a 5-run frame, scoring on a Jacob Ruba RBI single, an Ethan Hasty 2-run RBI single, a Kolton Hefti RBI single and a Huxley Lingenfelter RBI single to put the Cowboys ahead 6-0. A-P answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to make it 6-4, as CGD added an insurance run in the 5th on a Tristan Kakacek sac fly to it make it 7-4. A-P rallied again in the 6th with 3 runs to tie the game at 7-7, before walking it off in the 7th on a wild pitch as the Falcons took an 8-7 victory.

Jarek TerHark was charged with the loss in relief, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 2 hits and striking out 1 in 2.1 innings. Ethan Hasty went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Jacob Ruba, Tristan Kakacek, Paxton Lingenfelter and Huxley Lingenfelter all drove in runs.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Hampton-Dumont-CAL for a North Central Conference doubleheader, with Game 1 at 5 PM.
