BUFFALO CENTER, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip into far northern Iowa to take on the North Iowa Bison in non-conference action at the North Iowa Sports Complex. CGD entered with a record of 2-4, while North Iowa entered at 1-2.
A scoreless first gave way to a 3-run 2nd for the Cowboys, behind a Ryland Morgan RBI single, and a Jacob Ruba 2-run RBI single to make it 3-0 CGD. The Cowboys added a run in the 3rd on an error to make it 4-0, as North Iowa scratched a run across in the 5th to make it 4-1. CGD added onto the lead in the 6th with a Tristan Kakacek 2-run RBI single to make it 6-1, as the Bison fought back with 3 runs to make it 6-4 going into the 7th. In the 7th, the Cowboys would score 5 runs on a wild pitch, a Chaz Lane RBI single, an error and another wild pitch to make it 11-4. North Iowa would make a charge in the 7th by scoring 4 runs, but CGD was able to nail down an 11-8 victory.
Drew Smith picked up the win on the mound, going 4 innings and allowing no runs on 1 hit and striking out 7. Tristan Kakacek went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, while Chaz Lane went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Monday, as they host the St. Edmond Gaels for a North Central Conference doubleheader at CGD High School, with Game 1 starting at 5 PM on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
