Webster City girls soccer comes up short against Clear Lake in back-and-forth battle, 4-3

CLEAR LAKE, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx girls soccer team returned to action on Monday evening, as they made the trip into Cerro Gordo County to take on the Clear Lake Lions in North Central Conference action at Lions Field. Webster City entered with a record of 5-6, as Clear Lake entered at 6-5-1.

Clear Lake would get off to a fast start, as Avery Hegtvedt scored in the 3rd minute to put the Lions ahead 1-0 early, but Webster City responded midway through the first half, as Janey Putney tied the game off a free kick in the 17th minute at 1-1, as Carmen Santiago gave Webster City the lead just 2 minutes later in the 19th minute, as the Lynx led 2-1 at the halftime break.

The response from the Lions was quick in the 2nd half, as Ava DeNio scored in the 44th minute to tie the game at 2-2, as minutes later Avery Hegtvedt put Clear Lake back ahead in the 51st minute at 3-2. Webster City would respond nearly seconds later, as Fina Johnson scored in the 52nd minute to tie the match at 3-3, but in the closing minutes, Avery Hegtvedt came up clutch for the Lions, scoring in the 76th minute to give Clear Lake a 4-3 victory.

Webster City girls soccer returns to action on Tuesday, when they host the Boone Toreadors in non-conference action at Lynx Field, with kickoff at 5:30 PM.
