Eagle Grove football falls at home to Emmetsburg, 49-8

The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they welcomed in the Emmetsburg E-Hawks in Class 1A, District 2 action at Gene Hinrichsen Field in Eagle Grove. The Eagles entered Friday at 0-6 and 0-3 in the district, while Emmetsburg entered at 4-2 and 3-0 in district play.

The night would start off sour for the Eagles, as Emmetsburg’s Gavin Swanson returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0 E-Hawks. Eagle Grove would go 3-and-out on their opening drive, before Emmetsburg would march down the field and score on a 20-yard touchdown run by Gavin Swanson to make it 13-0 Emmetsburg. It wouldn’t take long for the E-Hawks to score again, as Adrian Whipple’s pass on the drive’s first play was picked off by Gavin Swanson and returned 37 yards for a touchdown to put Emmetsburg up 20-0. Both sides would trade stops to start the 2nd quarter, but Emmetsburg got the upper hand once more as Gavin Swanson scored his 4th touchdown of the first half on a 14-yard run to make the score 27-0 E-Hawks. Eagle Grove would be stopped on 4th down on their ensuing drive, and Emmetsburg capitalized on a 38-yard touchdown run by Jace Nelson-Brown to put the E-Hawks up 35-0 at the halftime break.

Eagle Grove would not move the football much in the opening drive of the 2nd half, as Emmetsburg took their first drive of the half and scored on a 15-yard touchdown run by Owen Householder to make it 42-0 Emmetsburg. The Eagles would fumble on the ensuing possession, and Emmetsburg would capitalize quick off it once more, as Tyce Jenness scored off a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 49-0 E-Hawks. Eagle Grove would get on the board on the ensuing drive, as Drake Canavan scored from 5 yards out to make it 49-8, which would be the final score.

Drake Canavan would rush for 122 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries on the night, while Connor Christopher racked up 10 tackles.

Eagle Grove returns to action on Friday, when they host Pocahontas Area on senior night at 7 PM.
