The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the long trip up to the Iowa Great Lakes Region to take on the Okoboji Pioneers in Class 2A, District 2 action at Okoboji High school. CGD entered with a record of 2-4 and 1-2 in the district, while Okoboji entered at 1-5 and 0-3 in the district.
Things would start sour for the Cowboys, as the Pioneers scored on the first play of the game off a 66-yard touchdown pass from Landon Duvall to Jase Jostand to make it 7-0 Okoboji. CGD would respond by marching back down the field and scoring to tie the score at 7-7. Scoring would subside for the 1st quarter before Diego Gonzalez got into the end zone to put CGD up 14-7. The Cowboys would then go to the air, as Carson Nesheim found his freshman tight end in Huxley Lingenfelter on 3rd down, and Lingenfelter scooted 44 yards for a touchdown to put CGD up 21-7 at the halftime break.
CGD took the football to start the 2nd half and Carson Nesheim would provide the spark as he scored on a 44-yard touchdown run to make it 27-7 Cowboys. The Cowboys defense would force a punt before the offense marched back down the field as Carson Nesheim then found Wyatt DeCoster all alone on an 11-yard touchdown pass to make it 34-7 CGD. Okoboji would have a response on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Landon Duvall to Caleb Simington to make it 34-13 CGD. Okoboji would onside the ensuing kickoff, but the Cowboys would fall on it and drive the short field and cap the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run by Charlie Campbell to give CGD a 41-13 lead. Both sides would trade touchdowns in the 4th quarter to bring the final to 55-27.
Cowboys running back Diego Gonzalez had a big night with 183 yards and 3 touchdowns off 25 carries, while Charlie Campbell had 96 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, and senior fullback Mason Allen had 87 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Carson Nesheim would go 3/4 passing with 71 yards and 2 touchdowns, while rushing for another 68 yards and a touchdown.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows wraps up the regular season on Friday, when they host the district leaders in #5 Spirit Lake on Friday at 7 PM.
