Webster City girls tennis competes in singles and doubles regional

Members of the Webster City Lynx girls tennis team made the drive east on Wednesday, to compete in a Class 1A Singles and Doubles Regional Tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock High School. The Lynx were joined by the host Go-Hawks, Charles City, Clear Lake, Decorah, Hampton-Dumont-CAL, Iowa Falls-Alden, Osage and Fort Dodge, St. Edmond.

In the singles tournament, Jordyn Sullivan entered the bracket as the 4-seed for the Lynx and went to work right away, defeating Waverly-Shell Rock’s Alexis Gielau in a 2-1 decision, in sets of 0-6, 7-6 and 10-5. Sullivan would advance to second round against Charles City’s Sophia Jensen, where again Sullivan won a 2-1 decision in sets of 6-2, 4-6 and 10-8. In the semifinals, Sullivan squared off with Decorah’s Allison Pavlovec, who upset #1 seed Lauren Wood in the quarterfinals. Sullivan gave it a run, but fell 2-0 in sets of 3-6 and 1-6 to end her day.

In the doubles tournament, the duo of Mackenzie Burney and MaKaylee Draeger bowed out in the first round to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Brooke Willis and Grace Gaede. Joslin Gourley and Kayley Wibholm entered as the two-seed and performed as such, making quick work of Waverly-Shell Rock’s Maggie Hart and Maddie Leary with a 2-0 decision. In the quarterfinals, they faced off with Iowa Falls-Alden’s Aubrey Johnson and Kaydence Winters, making quick work of them in another 2-0 decision. In the semifinals, Gourley and Wibholm matched up with Osage’s Kaitlyn Olson and Kendall Olson, as the Green Devils duo had enough to outmatch the Lynx duo in a 2-0 decision with scores of 4-6 and 5-7.

Webster City’s girls team will be back in full action on Saturday, when they face off with the Ballard Bombers at McHose Park in Boone. The winner will face the winner of Boone and Denison-Schleswig later in the day.
