The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams returned to action for the 2nd night in a row on Tuesday, as they hosted the Bulldogs of Algona in North Central Conference play. The Algona girls entered with an 8-10 record, while the Algona boys entered with a 7-9 record.
The Cowgirls got off to a fast start in their second matchup with the Bulldogs, leading 11-4 after the first quarter. Algona’s offense would wake up in the 2nd quarter, trailing just 22-18 at halftime. As the Cowgirls offense slowed down in the third, Algona’s offense kept it’s pace, taking a 33-30 lead into the fourth. Both sides traded punches in the 4th, but it was Algona that was able to seal the deal with a 51-46 win.
The boys game followed, and for the second game in a row, defense was the name of the game. However, Algona’s defense arrived to play, unlike the first time in Algona. The Bulldogs were able to hold down the Cowboys offense for a large part of the game, as they led 31-28 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The CGD defense turned up the intensity in the 4th, forcing 11 Algona turnovers, but the game was still in doubt. However, Aidan Harrington would deliver the big play for the Cowboys, scoring a bucket with a foul with 3 seconds to play. The made free throw gave CGD the lead and the win by a final of 43-40.
Next action for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will be on Friday, when they host the Humboldt Wildcats.
