South Hamilton falls in heartbreaker to Woodward-Granger, 34-30

South Hamilton entered Friday night with a 1-0 mark in district play, and were looking to keep pace in the Class 1A, District 2 title race as they faced off with Woodward-Granger at Uthe Field in Woodward. A game that was expected to be a close contest wound up being better than many expected.

South Hamilton got the night started on an 18-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tjerdan Johnson to put South Hamilton 8-0. Woodward-Granger would answer as Carter Moran found Dane Polich for a 16-yard touchdown pass to cut the South Hamilton lead to 8-6. South Hamilton would strike before halftime, off a 2-yard touchdown run by Landon Skartvedt to put the Hawks up 16-6 heading into halftime.

Woodward-Granger got the first points of the 2nd half as Carter Moran found Dane Polich once again for a 26-yard touchdown pass to cut the score to 16-14. The WG Hawks would strike again shortly thereafter on a Dustin Harney touchdown to put them up 20-16. South Hamilton would respond with a 7-yard touchdown run by Landon Skartvedt to put South Hamilton back on top 24-20.

Woodward-Granger again responded with Dustin Harney to put WG back on top, 28-24. With just over a minute to go, Landon Skartvedt punched in his 3rd touchdown of the night on a 14-yard run, to put South Hamilton up 30-28. However, Woodward-Granger had the final say, as Dustin Harney scored from 3 yards out with 4 seconds remaining to give WG a 34-30 win.

Woodward-Granger moves to 2-0 in district play and will face Belmond-Klemme on Friday. South Hamilton drops to 1-1 in district play and will take on South Central Calhoun on Friday.
