Clarion-Goldfield-Dows falls in dogfight with Pocahontas Area, 24-17

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows looked to bounce back from their district-opening loss a week ago to Estherville-Lincoln Central by making a trip west to take on Pocahontas Area. The Indians were fresh off a 52-9 drubbing at the hands of Spirit Lake.

Pocahontas Area would score first in the 2nd quarter, to set the score at 7-0, but the Cowboys would respond. Preston Gardner was limited on the ground for the second game in a row, but did damage through the air as he found senior Jaxon Carpenter for a 17-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 7-7. The Indians would add another touchdown and a Kolbe Rutherford field goal to put Pocahontas Area up 17-7 at halftime.

The Indians would try and keep the Cowboys at arms length and did so for the 3rd quarter. CGD would add a field goal by Brallon Gomez to make the score 17-10, before Pocahontas punched in a touchdown in the 4th quarter to make it 24-10. Preston Gardner would again go up top to Jaxon Carpenter for a 71-yard touchdown with just over 2 minutes left to cut the score to 24-17, but the Cowboys were unable to get the football back and fell 24-17.

Pocahontas Area moved to 1-1 in district play, and will face OABCIG on Friday. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows moved to 0-2 in district play and will face Southeast Valley on Friday.
