GILBERT, Ia. — The Webster City Lynx football team returned to the field on Friday night, as they made the short trip into northern Story County to take on the Gilbert Tigers in non-district action at Tiger Stadium at Gilbert High School. Webster City entered at 0-3, while Gilbert entered at 2-1.
Defenses ruled early on Friday evening as both Webster City and Gilbert traded stops through the first quarter and into the 2nd quarter. Gilbert would get on the board first with a 45-yard touchdown run by Joe Niegsch to put the Tigers ahead 7-0, as Gilbert added a 45-yard field goal from senior Miles Manatt as the Tigers took a 10-0 lead into the halftime break.
Gilbert would strike first in the 3rd quarter on a 16-yard touchdown run by Joe Niegsch as the Tigers went ahead 17-0. Webster City’s offense would then open up in the 3rd as Kaleb Hansen scored on a 34-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 17-6. Gilbert would march down and respond with a Miles Manatt 35-yard field goal to put the Tigers ahead 20-6, but Webster City would march right back down on a long drive and score on a Kaleb Hansen 2-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 20-13. However, the Lynx could not get closer than that, as Gilbert scored a 4th quarter touchdown on an 11-yard run by Luke Andersen as the Tigers salted away a 27-13 victory.
The Aces of the Game, presented by Ace Hardware of Webster City, were Webster City seniors Kaleb Hansen and Grant Arends: Hansen carried 27 times for 154 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Arends had 8 tackles, 2 TFL and a forced fumble. Kaleb Hansen also added 6.5 tackles and a TFL, while Edwin Ramos Nolasco had 5.5 tackles, a TFL and a fumble recovery.
Webster City football returns to action on Friday, when they host their longtime rivals in the Humboldt Wildcats in their Class 3A, District 1 opener at Lynx Field, with kickoff at 7 PM on AM 1570/FM 99.1 KZWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
