LAKE CITY, Ia. — The South Hamilton Hawks football team returned to the gridiron on Friday night, as they made the trip west on Highway 175 to take on the South Central Calhoun Titans in their Class 1A, District 2 opener at South Central Calhoun High School. The Hawks entered Friday at 1-2, while the Titans entered at 3-0.
Both teams traded possessions to begin the game, as it was South Central Calhoun that was first on the board with an 8-yard touchdown run by Brayden Werneburg to put the Titans up 8-0, by the end of the first quarter. The 2nd quarter saw the Titans strengthen their grip with a 54-yard touchdown run by Avery Patterson, and an 8-yard touchdown run by quarterback John Patterson as the Titans took a 24-0 lead at the halftime break.
The 2nd half saw the Titans pick up where they left off, as South Central Calhoun took over half the 3rd quarter off the clock and scored on an 8-yard touchdown run by Garrett Krause to put the Titans up 30-0, before Dustin Dean scampered 22 yards for a touchdown to put SCC up 36-0. South Hamilton would score 2 fourth quarter touchdowns, scoring on a 60-yard run by Wyatt Gelder and a 5-yard run by Maddux Becker as the Hawks fell to South Central Calhoun by a final of 36-15.
The Ace of the Game, presented by Ace Hardware of Webster City, was junior Wyatt Gelder, who carried 11 times for 95 yards and a touchdown. Maddux Becker ran 7 times for 21 yards and a touchdown, as Ben Swenson had 8 tackles with 1.5 TFL and a sack.
South Hamilton football returns to action on Friday night as they host the (1A) #10 East Sac Raiders for homecoming in Class 1A, District 2 action at Bill Taylor Field, with kickoff at 7 PM.
