South Hamilton football falls in opener to (A) #6 Saint Ansgar, 55-7

SAINT ANSGAR, Ia. — The South Hamilton Hawks football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip north to the Iowa-Minnesota border to take on the Saint Ansgar Saints in non-district action at Saint Ansgar High School.

Saint Ansgar struck on their opening drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Matt Clevenger to put the Saints up 7-0. The Hawks would end their opening possession near midfield, before the Saints drove down and scored on a 6-yard run to make the score 14-0. Following a Hawks punt, the Saints then scored on a 52-yard touchdown run to put Saint Ansgar up 21-0. The Saints would score 3 more times in the opening half on a 51-yard touchdown pass, a 12-yard touchdown pass and another 12-yard touchdown pass as South Hamilton trailed 42-0 at the halftime break.

The 2nd half saw Saint Ansgar score on their opening drive to take a 49-0 lead, before scoring once more in the 3rd quarter to take a 55-0 lead. South Hamilton did get on the board in the 4th quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run from Wyatt Gelder, to bring the final score to 55-7 in favor of Saint Ansgar.

Wyatt Gelder led the Hawks with 69 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, as Kaden Dean had 8 carries for 35 yards. Dean also led the Hawks with 4 tackles on Friday night.

South Hamilton football returns to action on Friday, as they host the Panorama Panthers in non-district answer for the Hawks home opener at Bill Taylor Field, with kickoff at 7 PM.
