COLFAX, Ia. — The South Hamilton Hawks baseball team returned to action on Thursday night, as they made the trip into Jasper County to take on a former HOIAC rival in the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks. South Hamilton entered with a record of 0-16, while Colfax-Mingo entered at 3-12.
After a scoreless first, South Hamilton was first on the board with a Sam Koehnk 2-run RBI double to put the Hawks ahead 2-0, as Colfax-Mingo answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to make it 2-1. South Hamilton added two more runs in the 3rd on an error, before adding 2 more runs in the 4th on a Brody Harris RBI single and a Garrett Johnson RBI triple to take a 6-1 lead. Colfax-Mingo mounted a rally in the 4th with a 3-run frame to bring the score to 6-4, as South Hamilton added a big insurance run on a passed ball in the 7th to take a 7-4 lead. The Tigerhawks scored a run in the 7th, but couldn’t get any closer as the Hawks sealed a 7-5 victory.
Garrett Johnson would pick up the win on the mound, going 5 innings and allowing 4 runs (0 earned) on 6 hits and striking out 5. Johnson also had the top night at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Sam Kohenk would go 1-for-2 with a 2-run RBI double.
South Hamilton baseball returns to action on Friday, when they host the Perry Bluejays in Heart of Iowa Conference action at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex, with first pitch at 7:30 PM.
