CLARION, Ia. — The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys baseball team returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Iowa Falls-Alden Cadets for a North Central Conference doubleheader at CGD High School. CGD entered with a record of 7-12, while Iowa Falls-Alden entered at 6-11.
Game 1 was scoreless in the first, before IF-A scored the games first run in the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead. That 1-0 advantage lasted until the 5th, when the Cadets added 2 runs in the 5th, followed by 2 more runs in the 6th as Iowa Falls-Alden capped a 5-0 shutout victory.
Jacob Ruba took the loss despite pitching well, going 6 innings and allowing 5 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and striking out 6. Chaz Lane would go 1-for-3 with a double, while Charlie Campbell also went 1-for-2.
Game 2 saw more offense and better results for CGD, as the Cowboys scored 2 in the top of the first on an Ethan Hasty RBI groundout and a Charlie Campbell RBI triple to put the Cowboys ahead 2-0, but IF-A answered with 2 runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2 after one. CGD then added 3 runs in the 3rd on an error, a wild pitch and a Brandon Stein steal of home, as IF-A responded with 2 runs to make the score 5-4 Cowboys after 3. That’s all the closer it would get as CGD broke it open in the 4th with 5 runs on a Tristan Kakacek RBI groundout, an error, an Ethan Hasty RBI triple, a Huxley Lingenfelter RBI groundout and a wild pitch as the Cowboys took a 10-4 lead. IF-A would score a run in the 6th, but CGD would clamp things down for a 10-5 victory.
Drew Smith picked up the win on the mound, going 5 innings and allowing 4 runs on 6 hits and struck out 5. Charlie Campbel would go 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Ethan Hasty went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and a triple.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball returns to action on Tuesday, when they host the Central Springs Panthers in non-conference action at CGD High School, with first pitch at 7:30 PM.
