Jewell City Council adopts its city budget for 2026-27 this week.

Jewell- This week the Jewell City Council held a public hearing to adopt the city budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. No objections were raised during the hearing. The budget was adopted starting on July 1,2026. The resolution shows the amount of revenue  estimated at $1,911,619 and appropriation for expenditures in the amount of $1,761,010. The following allocations to programs were approved. The Montgomery Memorial Library will receive $68,000 from the general fund, JADE will receive $5000, the Hamilton County Sheriff will receive $17,024. YSS will receive $1000. Upper Des Moines Opportunity will receive $775 and the Jewell recreational sports teams will receive $3000. The council went on to approve salaries for city staff for the coming fiscal year.

There was discussion to amend the 2025-26 city budget. Additional revenues  of $69,808 were planned and additional expenditures of $279,207. $64,360 from the sewer department and the rest from additional government activities including the retainage payment to Jet Drain Services for the Main Street Project. The public hearing for the budget amendment is set for May 11th at 7:15 p.m. at the Jewell City Hall.
