Roland-Story girls basketball falls short in opener with Gilbert, 45-43

STORY CITY, Ia. — The Roland-Story Norsemen girls basketball team opened their 2025-26 season on Friday night, as they welcomed in their county and former HOIAC rivals in the Gilbert Tigers to Roland-Story High School.

Friday’s game would be tight throughout, as Roland-Story led 9-8 at the end for the first quarter, slightly pushing out the advantage at halftime to a score of 26-23. The 3rd quarter would be evenly matched as the Norsemen led 39-36 going into the final frame. Defenses would rule the 4th quarter, but they free throws of Gilbert senior Callie Hales were enough to get the Tigers by the Norsemen by a final of 45-43.

Riley Johnson was the KQWC Player of the Game, finishing with 19 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, as Emma Truesdell added 9 points and Camry Thoreson had 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Roland-Story girls basketball returns to action after Thanksgiving break, when they open their Heart of Iowa Conference schedule with a road trip to Grand View Christian in Des Moines, with tip-off at 6 PM.
