Eagle Grove football falls in heartbreaker against Ogden, 25-24

EAGLE GROVE — The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday, as they hosted the Ogden Bulldogs in non-district action at Gene Hinrichsen Field in Eagle Grove. The Eagles entered at 1-0, while Ogden also entered the contest 1-0.

Friday’s first quarter would be a scoreless one as the Eagles and Bulldogs defenses kept both offenses in check. Ogden would be first on the board in the 2nd quarter, aided by a drive with a questionable penalty call, as Cayden Dudley scored from 5 yards out to put the Bulldogs ahead 6-0. Eagle Grove responded on the next drive as Logan Willard went to his bag of tricks and dialed up a reverse to receiver Gavin Pedersen, who went untouched for a 51-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles ahead 8-6 after the two-point conversion. Ogden would respond late in the first half, as quarterback CeJay Jones found receiver Treyton Mitchell for a 27-yard touchdown pass to put the Bulldogs ahead 13-8. Eagle Grove would manage to put together a 2-minute drive, as Trenton Robinson scored a 6-yard touchdown run with 1:05 to go in the half to give Eagle Grove a 16-13 halftime lead.

Ogden would be first on the board in the 2nd half off a 3-yard touchdown run by Cayden Dudley to put the Bulldogs ahead 19-16. That would be the only score of the quarter as Eagle Grove put together a drive that lasted into the 4th quarter and was punctuated by a 21-yard touchdown run by Leelan Spencer as the Eagles took a 24-19 lead. Ogden would have one more response in them, as the Bulldogs drove the field and scored on a 6-yard touchdown pass from CeJay Jones to Weston Sundell as the Bulldogs held on for a 25-24 win.

Trenton Robinson led Eagle Grove with 22 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown, while Leelan Spencer had 14 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Hayden Schafer led the Eagles defense with 8.5 tackles and 1.5  TFL, while Dylan Terwilliger and Gavin Pedersen each recorded interceptions.

Eagle Grove football returns to action on Friday, when they host the West Fork Warhawks in their non-district finale for homecoming, with kickoff at 7 PM from Gene Hinrichsen Field.
