The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Eagle Grove Eagles baseball teams returned to action on Saturday, as the two county rivals faced off with one another in the first round of their Class 2A, Substate 7 bracket at CGD High School in Clarion. CGD entered with a record of 9-17, while Eagle Grove entered at 6-15.
Saturday’s first 3 innings would go scoreless behind some stellar defensive plays from both sides, as Eagle Grove was first on the board in the 4th, scoring 2 runs on a pair of errors to go ahead 2-0. However, the dam on this low-scoring affair broke in the bottom of the 4th as CGD plated 8 runs thanks to a Huxley Lingenfelter 2-run RBI single, a Tristan Kakacek bases-loaded walk, a passed ball, a Jacob Ruba RBI single and an Ethan Hasty 2-run RBI single to put the Cowboys up 8-2. Eagle Grove rallied with a 2-run RBI single from Syrus Willard in the 6th, only to be rebutted by 3 more CGD runs in the 6th off an error and an Owen Sweeney 2-run RBI single to help the Cowboys cap an 11-4 win.
For Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Ethan Hasty went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, Huxley Lingenfelter went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI, as Owen Sweeney went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Jacob Ruba picked up the win, allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 4 hits and struck out 2.
For Eagle Grove, Syrus Willard went 2-for-4 with a 2-run RBI double, while Hayden Schafer went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jaxon Morris was charged with the loss, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits and struck out 3.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball advances to face #3 Van Meter in their Class 2A, Substate 7 quarterfinal on Tuesday, with first pitch from Van Meter at 7 PM on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com. Eagle Grove’s season ends with a record of 6-16.
