South Hamilton softball holds off Roland-Story, 8-6

The South Hamilton Hawks and Roland-Story Norsemen softball teams returned to action on Wednesday Night, as they renewed their longstanding rivalry at the Hennessey Diamonds in Roland in Heart of Iowa Conference action. South Hamilton entered at 4-6, while Roland-Story entered at 2-5.

It would be a fast start for the Hawks on Wednesday night, plating 4 runs in the 1st inning on a Makena Galetich RBI single, an Ashlyn Erickson 2-run RBI single and a Kendra Hoversten RBI single to put South Hamilton up 4-0 after the 1st. The Hawks added another run on a wild pitch in the 2nd to go up 5-0. Roland-Story wouldn’t get on the board until the 5th, thanks to a Miley Geise sac fly that scored Keely Obererender to make it 5-1. South Hamilton would put 3 more runs up in the 6th, off RBI from Emma Lammers and Claire Hewitt to put the Hawks up 8-1. Roland-Story would then mount a rally in the 6th, scoring on an RBI single from Lauren Crabbs, a bases-clearing double by Keely Oberender and a Peyton Jeter RBI double to bring the score to 8-6, but Hawks pitcher Makena Galetich shut down the hopes of completing the comeback in the 7th in the 8-6 victory.

Ashlyn Erickson would go 4-for-5 with 2 RBI on the night, while Kendra Hoversten was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Makena Galetich pitched all 7 innings, allowing 6 runs (2 earned) on 11 hits and struck out 3 batters. Keely Oberender would go 3-for-3 with with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, as Miley Geise was charged with the loss, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing 4 runs off 5 hits and striking out 2.

South Hamilton softball returns to action on Thursday when they host Saydel in Heart of Iowa Conference action at 6 PM. Roland-Story softball returns to action on Thursday when they travel to LeGrand to face East Marshall in non-conference action at 7:00 PM.
