South Hamilton basketball sweeps St. Edmond in home non-con matchup

The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Thursday night, as they welcomed in the Gaels of St. Edmond to South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered at 4-1, while the Hawk boys entered at 4-0.

South Hamilton’s girls dominated for the 3rd contest in a row, leading St. Edmoind 16-2 after the first quarter, which was extended to 36-6 at the halftime break. Reserves got most of the run in the 2nd half, as South Hamilton played out a 58-19 victory. Ashlyn Erickson and Makena Galetich tied for a game-high 19 points, while Galetich added 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.

The boys game followed in an affair that would be air-tight throughout, as the Hawks led 11-10 after the first quarter, but trailed 26-24 at halftime. St. Edmond maintained the lead at 39-38 going into the 4th quarter, and held a 1-point advantage with under 5 seconds to go, but Landon Greufe’s steal and layup with 4 seconds left gave South Hamilton a 57-56 win.

Ryland Ubben led the Hawks with 22 points, while Jonathan Drake and Owen Renaud finished with 9 points. South Hamilton returns to action on Friday when they host Perry in Heart of Iowa Conference action.
