Roland-Story falls in district opener to Carroll Kuemper, 42-7

The Roland-Story Norsemen football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Knights of Carroll Kuemper in the Norsemen’s Class 2A, District 8 opener at newly-renovated Kerry Van Winkle Field in Story City. The Norsemen entered with a record of 2-1, while the Knights entered with a similar 2-1 record.

Carroll Kuemper would come out of the gates swinging, with the Knights scoring on a quarterback sneak from DJ Vonnahme to put them up 7-0. Vonnahme then showed his versatility as a receiver, as quarterback Brock Badding found him for a 14-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the 1st quarter to go up 14-0. Following another Roland-Story punt, the Knights turned into points instantly as Carson Kanne returned the punt 60 yards to the house to put Kuemper up 21-0, which would be the halftime score.

Roland-Story would not back down, with the Norsemen scoring off a 7-yard run by Jonovan Wilkinson to cut the deficit to 21-7, but the Knights were able to punch a Will Simons 2-yard run just before the 4th quarter to put Kuemper up 28-7. Brock Badding would find receiver Ben Gerken midway through the 4th for a 14-yard touchdown pass to make the score 35-7, as Kaesin Pierce would score on a 1-yard run to put the icing on a 42-7 win for Carroll Kuemper.

Jonovan Wilkinson was the top offensive weapon for the Norsemen, with 10 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown in the game. Roland-Story returns to action on Friday, when they take on Southeast Valley in Gowrie.
