Webster City splits varsity matchup with Humboldt

The Webster City Lynx baseball and softball teams returned to action on Monday night, as they welcomed in their long-time North Central Conference rivals in the Humboldt Wildcats, to Webster City High School. Webster City baseball entered at 6-8 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Lynx softball entered at 3-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

For the Lynx baseball team, they would jump out to an early 1-0 lead, but an 8-run third inning put Webster City well behind the 8-ball against the high-powered Wildcats. The Lynx would scratch across a couple of runs in the 5th, but a 4-run top of the 7th all but cinched up a 13-3 Humboldt win. Sophomore Isaiah Busick was the winning pitcher for Humboldt, going 6 1/3 IP, 5 strikeouts, allowing 5 hits and 3 runs, with 5 hit batsmen. Keegan Hisler was the losing pitcher, going 2 1/3 IP, striking out 2, walking 7 batters and allowing 6 earned runs. Briar Klaver would tally 2 RBI for the Lynx.

For Webster City softball, the Lynx got out of the gate early, getting a run across on an Ava Petersen RBI single to go up 1-0. Bonnie Nohrenberg would then pick up an RBI in the 3rd off a fielder’s choice, scoring Adeline Tesdahl after her leadoff triple as Webster City went up 2-0, soon followed by a Breanna Bahrenfuss infield RBI single that scored Livia Kasch as the Lynx went up 3-0. Humboldt would get a run back in the 5th, but Webster City answered Bonnie Nohrenberg’s 2nd RBI of the night to put the Lynx up 4-1. Wildcats would tack a run on in the 6th, but Delainey Bargfrede would slam the door shut at the end as Webster City picked up a 4-2 win. Bargfrede would pitch the complete game, allowing 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), striking out 10 while walking 2.

Webster City baseball returns to action on Tuesday night as they host Saydel. Webster City softball returns on Wednesday, when they host Clear Lake.
