The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball and softball teams returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Clear Lake Lions in North Central Conference action at CGD High School in Clarion. The Cowboys entered with a 1-10 record and 0-4 in conference play, while the Cowgirls entered at 2-5 and 1-3 in conference play.
CGD baseball has been accustomed to high-scoring affairs early in the 2023 season, but Monday showcased strong pitching and defense from the Cowboys, as Carson Nesheim would go the complete game, allowing 2 hits and striking out 12. Offensively, all the Cowboys need was a Caden Hankins RBI double in the 1st inning, and Carson Nesheim helping his own cause with a sacrifice fly in the 5th as Clarion scored a huge 2-0 win over Clear Lake.
The CGD softball team would be behind the 8-ball early as Clear Lake led 4-0 going into the bottom of the 3rd, as CGD would pick up a run. The Lions would add a run each in the 4th and 5th to take a 6-1 lead, but CGD would score in the bottom of the 5th, before making a rally in the bottom of the 7th, that ultimately fell short as Clear Lake came away with a 6-4 win. Indy Johnson would have a big night at the plate, going 2-3 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while Haley Darland pitched all 7 innings, allowing 11 hits, 6 runs, walking 6 and striking out 6.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Belmond to take on the Belmond-Klemme Broncos.
