Preseason Preview: Clarion-Goldfield-Dows boys basketball

Of the 8 teams that comprise the North Central Conference, very few return as much experience and scoring as the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys. The Cowboys return 50.5 points of the 62.7 points per game they averaged in 2020-21, which led them to an 11-11 record.

The Cowboys were led in scoring by Connor State, who averaged just under 17 points per game a season ago. State also averaged 8 rebounds and nearly 3 blocks per contest. Coady Olson and Jaxon Carpenter were also key contributors as starters in 2020-21, as Olson averaged just over 10 points per game, and Carpenter averaged over 9 points, as well as 5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Newcomers that will look to fill in larger roles include Aiden Harrington, who averaged 5.1 points per game a season ago, as well as Nevan Foss, Jacob Moore, Cael Chase, Landon Olson and Preston Gardner. The big task for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will be replacing senior point guard Mateo Martinez, who averaged 16.6 points per game and a team-high 3 steals per game.

The Cowboys will open their season on November 29th, when travel west to face Wright County-rival Eagle Grove at 7:30 PM.
