An off duty Boone police officer died over the weekend. The department’s Facebook page announced the death of officer Mario Gonzalez. He died of injuries in a traffic accident on Saturday. The circumstances behind the cause of the accident were not released. Gonzalez was a full time officer with the Boone Police Department from August,2016 until October, 2019 and has been a part time officer up to his death. He was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard. Gonzalez was a husband and the father of two small children. A memorial fund has been established at Vision Bank to assist the Gonzalez family.
