JEWELL, Ia. — The South Hamilton Hawks football team returned to the field on Friday Night, as they hosted the Pocahontas Area Indians in Class 1A, District 2 action at Bill Taylor Field. South Hamilton entered with a record of 1-4, while Pocahontas Area entered at 2-3.
Pocahontas would score first on a 63-yard touchdown run by quarterback Coen Hammen to take an 8-0 lead. South Hamilton then answered on a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Garrett Johnson as the Hawks tied the game at 8-8. Pocahontas would fumble on their ensuing drive, as the Hawks took the ball and scored on a 29-yard touchdown run by Kash Northrop, as South Hamilton took a 16-8 lead. Pocahontas would then score early in the 2nd quarter on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Hammen to Isaiah Dolan as the Indians cut the lead to 16-15. The Indians then picked up a stop of the Hawks offense, as Hammen found Gabe Halligan for a 12-yard touchdown pass to put the Indians ahead 23-16. Garrett Johnson then scored on a 17-yard touchdown run as the Hawks reclaimed the lead at 24-23, as Pocahontas would then score with under a minute to go in the first half on a 2-yard touchdown run by Xander Small as the Indians took a 30-24 lead at halftime.
South Hamilton took the football to start the 2nd half and scored on a 60-yard touchdown run by Kash Northrop as the Hawks tied the game at 30-30, as Pocahontas then answered with a 14-yard touchdown run by Xander Small to put the Indians ahead 38-30 going into the 4th quarter. South Hamilton would wait until late in the 4th quarter to even things up on a 5-yard touchdown run by Reggie Williams to make 38-38, but Pocahontas scored with 14 seconds left on a pass from Hammen to Gabe Halligan, as the Indians came away with a 46-38 win.
South Hamilton rolled up 313 yards on the ground, as Kash Northrop had 12 carries for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns, as Garrett Johnson had 4 carries for 33 yards and a score, while Reggie Williams had 20 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown.
South Hamilton football returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Emmetsburg to take on the E-Hawks in Class 1A, District 2 action with kickoff at 7 PM.
